NEW! Planmeca led dental imaging into 3rd dimension

Planmeca Oy introduced a new innovation in September 2006: a dental X-ray unit that utilizes three-dimensional imaging technique. Planmeca ProMax 3D X-ray unit offers panoramic, cephalometric, and 3D imaging as well as complementary and advanced imaging software for all dental radiology. The most versatile X-ray unit on the market was presented in Nord Dental Exhibition in Germany.

In modern dentistry, the need for more advanced imaging techniques is constantly growing. The traditional two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) generates the image of multiple axial slices, whereas the new three-dimensional imaging technique takes the whole volume needed in a single half circle scan. Consequently, the patient is exposed to radiation significantly shorter time.

The imaging technique is based on new CBVT technology (Cone Beam Volumetric Tomography), in which the X-ray beam has a shape of a cone or a pyramid. The operating principle of the CBVT is a lot simpler than the traditional CT’s working method. The technology requires, however, an easily read full-field radiation sensor and high computing capacity for image processing.

The sensor of the Planmeca ProMax 3D unit is a semiconductor-based flat-panel sensor, which – unlike earlier image intensifiers – is insensitive to electric or magnetic field disturbances. Digitally controlled movements ensure that the radiation sensitive sensor produces almost 300 noise-free, undistorted images at pre-programmed angles.

The total scanning time is 18 seconds. The actual exposure time is only 7 seconds, as each image is made using a short X-ray pulse instead of continuous radiation. This technique drastically reduces motion artifacts and patient dose. Thanks to the Ethernet-based data transfer, high volumes of image data are transferred from the digital sensor to the computer quickly and reliably.

The three-dimensional tomography is an excellent tool e.g. in implantology, dental and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, orthodontics, and TMJ analysis. It can also be successfully used in diagnosing ear, maxillary sinus, and respiratory tract diseases. The CBVT units are small in size and rather inexpensive compared to medical CT units, which brings them within reach of dentists and dental radiologists. Previously three-dimensional images could only be taken with medical CTs, placed in hospitals.

"In the field of dentistry, the three-dimensional imaging is becoming common amazingly fast. It provides incredibly accurate and comprehensive information on anatomy, which again serves implementation of more and more demanding treatments. The 3D imaging is likely to become a normal procedure in the future likewise today’s panoramic imaging which is a result of Finnish dental research in early 1960s", states Mr Markku Wederhorn, the Vice President of Digital Imaging and Applications Division.

As the 3D sensor can easily be attached to Planmeca ProMax X-ray unit, the same unit serves as a base for digital panoramic and cephalometric as well as three-dimensional imaging. This is enabled by the unique technique and technologically advanced design of the Planmeca ProMax platform: computer-controlled robot arm and pulsed digital X-ray generator.

Planmeca Oy has been a forerunner in technological development in dentistry for years. Planmeca is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of panoramic and intraoral X-ray units. The position is especially strong in the United States, where the market share is almost 40%. "The deliveries of Planmeca ProMax 3D units have already started and our worldwide order stock has grown fast. Expectations are high, accordingly", Wederhorn sums up.
